How to Unlock Your Nokia Cell Phone

Typically when you purchase a cell phone, the company that sold you the phone (ex: AT&T) ‘locked’ the phone before you bought it, so you can only use it on their network. This means that you can’t use your phone if on any other network, even if you change the SIM (which is an abbreviation for Subscriber Identity Module) card. The SIM card is the little piece of plastic that identifies your phone to the cellular network. Changing your SIM card to have your phone work on another network is useful especially if you want to travel to another country and want to buy a pre-paid SIM card so you can have cell phone access without roaming charges. There are services that offer to provide unlocking capabilities for a fee, but don’t pay for them! You can do it yourself for free, which is the perfect price.

Steps

1. Before trying anything else, contact your service provider and ask for an unlock code. Usually, if you’ve been a customer of theirs for some time, they will provide you with an unlock code for free. This is, by far, the best way to get your phone unlocked.
2. Download software to generate the unlocking code. Software is available on some websites for free and some pay websites that also offer support if things go wrong. See external links below.
3. Find the Serial number of the cell phone, also known as your IMEI number. This can be done by either removing the back of your cell phone and looking underneath the battery, or simply by typing in *#06# into your cell phone. It should be something like: 010082321439976/07951780736
4. Using the software you have downloaded, enter in your Manufacturer (which is in this case Nokia), and sliding the card out. Put the battery back in and power the phone on.
5. You will see a message “Insert SIM Card”. Enter all of the characters you see in your code, including the # symbols. To get a ‘p’ press * 3 times, to get a ‘+’ press the * key 2 times, to get a ‘w’ press the * key 4 times. Disregard any spaces in the code.
6. In order to unlock your phone you generally need to enter only one code. Start with the first one. If your phone is not unlocked by typing the first code (MCC+MNC), use code “7” (Multilock)
7. Once you have finished entering a code that works you should see a message that says “SIM is not restricted” or “Restriction off” message depending on your model. If not, try entering another code. Message “Cannot undo restrictions” means the phone is “hard-locked” and cannot be unlocked by code.

Tips

* For some phones, such as the E51, you may unlock them simply by updating the phone’s firmware using the Nokia PC Suite.
* Unlocking applies to all cellular phones. The steps provided above work for GSM phones. You CANNOT use the steps above to unlock a CDMA or TDMA phone. To “unlock” a CDMA or TDMA phones is known as reprogramming the phone. For CDMA phones, you need the Master Subsidary Lock or MSL, which you MAY be able to get from your service provider. Please note that you may not be able to get the MSL from your service provider, as it usually is against company policy to give these to customers.
* Switch off the phone. Hold the keys “3”, “*” and “Call” and switch the phone on. Keep the buttons held down till you see the word “Formatting…” on the screen. Make sure that the battery is full charged before you attempt this. This should reset the phone lock code.
* Also some software is able to unlock CDMA,GSM and other phones to different networks but you must watch for the fraud ones

Warnings

* Attempting to unlock your phone is done at your own risk. Although unlocking your phone is legal, some cell phone operators might choose to void your warranty should you unlock your phone.
* Most phones only allow you to try a certain number of unlock tries, Nokia phones have a limit of 5 tries. After that, the phone becomes “hard-locked”, meaning it cannot be unlocked without using special equipment.
* Most of the newer phones will not work with the codes generated by the free unlock programs.

When you are here, type MEPD on your keyboard (remember that you would not be able to see the typed text appear on your screen when you are doing this). Next type MEP then (with ALT Button) and then 2 (again realize that these would not appear on your screen while you type them). A prompt would then appear, asking you to “Enter Network MEP Code”, something that you should do with the code that you obtain online. Once you have inserted the code, press the track pad to confirm, and rejoice as your phone is now unlocked!

Check if your phone is unlocked by taking a SIM card from a different phone that accepts another network service and inserting it into your phone. If your Blackberry Torch 9800 displays an error code, then you did not perform the unlocking process properly. When you have an unlocked Blackberry Torch 9800, you could use your phone is any country, all you need is a prepaid SIM card with you. And this process is also 100% legal, thus you have nothing to worry about.

I have an unlocked at&t tilt aka kaiser Htc tynn. My question concerns how do I get T-mobile software on and At&t software off?

I am trying to sell this phone and it’s confusing to potential buyers. From T-mobile when they place their sims in and it still shows at&t software it is unlocked because otherwise it would ask for PUK a code or message insert sim card.

I unlocked it myself when contract was up requested and received the PUK code used old t-mobile sim card. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Unlocked phones are awesome! they let you switch between sim card from different networks. I always use an unlocked phone because I travel a lot and it saves me a heck of a lot of money on roaming charges, i just buy a pay as you go sim card from my destination, pop it into the phone and it works straight away! Trust me you should use an unlocked phone, it’s well worth it!

I just bought an AT&T Tilt (8925) and bought an unlock code on the internet. Now I’m using my tilt with Fido in Vancouver on Pay as you go. so yes it works right away, just pop in a sim card and your ready to go! It’s just great to have an unlocked phone, I’m planning on taking it to Germany with me in September and just buying a local sim card there. that way I avoid huge roaming charges.

Nokia 7360 only supports GSM 900/1800/1900MHz, so it can not work in AT&T. Besides, it has been out of production for some months.

i just bought a nokia N95 on ebay. I have service with cellular south. they say i can’t activate a phone unless i bought it from them. They don’t use sim cards and don’t carry that phone. The nokia N95 that I purchased is unlocked. Is there any way I can use the nokia N95 with cellular south?

I have a two year old Palm Treo 750. I wanted to switch carriers from Sprint to Verizon when I came up against the ‘proprietary’ aspect of the phone.

Being 77 and recently retired, am I forced to stay with Sprint, or is there a way for a wise geek to unlock this (now $400) pink elephant to use with Verizon?

Sprint and Verizon both require CDMA signal. We think a CDMA unlocked phone can solve it.

No, you can’t just put any old SIM card in a cell phone and expect it to work. If the card is not associated with an account at a service provider, you won’t get any service (except maybe 911).

And yes, this article has nothing to do (currently) with Sprint. Sprint is not GSM, does not use SIM cards, and thus “an unlocked phone” is not a concept that applies.

It is very VERY important you look at your sim card… for instance att in the us is running the 3g sim card. if you buy an unlocked super phone off the net that is for 2g sim card then you will most likely have issues when getting it on the us network. 2g and 2.5g sim cards are used everywhere else in the world as the networks are slowly changing over to 3g.

sim cards are in gsm network phones..

According my experience, if the phone is unlocked, it will be compatible with any carrier’s network with the same band that your phone supports, for example, if your unlocked cell phone supports GSM 1900,it can be useful in any network with GSM 1900 band.

In conclusion,you need pay attention to two factors: unlocked and GSM band.
