When cell phones are manufactured, they are made for particular service providers. This is the case for all cell phones, not just BlackBerries. If you live in the USA, your cell phone comes pre-locked to a service provider like AT&T or T-Mobile. In the UK your cell phone would be pre-locked to Orange, or O2, or Vodafone. This means your cell phone can only be used with the particular carrier to which it’s locked, and not with any other carries. To “unlock” your BlackBerry simply means to remove this restriction so that you can use your BlackBerry with any cell phone service provider around the world.

How does unlocking your BlackBerry benefit you?

For starters, you will save a whole lot of money on roaming fees if you ever travel. “Roaming” is when you use your original carrier’s SIM card in your BlackBerry and connecting to another carrier’s network.
