Bacteria are the oldest, the simplest, and the most numerous forms of life. They are reproducing by cell division and usually have rigid cell walls. These are very diverse. They can be shaped like spheres, rods or spirals and can be found in virtually any environment. The earliest fossils found on Earth are bacteria, almost 3.3 billion years old. Microscopic living organisms; some are helpful and some are harmful.

Good bacteria aid in pollution control by consuming and breaking down organic matter, some bacteria are helpful, like in our stomach. These bacteria help to digest the nutrients from the food and other pollutants in septic systems, sewage, oil spills, and soils. Even though bacteria are so tiny, they play a very large role in their ecosystem. Every living thing would not be here today if these were not for bacteria. Decomposing is one of the most important jobs bacteria do.
